Less is more. So much more.

I didn't realize how tired my eyes had become with all the visual stimulation of my normal daily life. To see the subtle changes of the water—soft ripples caused by an invisible wind, the sparkle of sunshine on the crests of tiny waves, the horizon line that seems designed simply to calm my restless mind—it all brings me such a sense of peace. Humans need less distraction and more time with this kind of unobstructed view. No wonder we find ourselves in a constant state of anxiety, rushing around in fight or flight mode most of the time. I finally feel relaxed.

Living aboard a boat for months at a time is an exercise in subtraction. Take away the things you thought you needed. Keep only what is useful or sparks joy. I realize the privilege of this lifestyle and I'm grateful we could make it happen. It took selling a house we loved so we could pare down and do this. This is our second summer at sea. I feel better prepared, more confident, but also hyper-aware that anything can go wrong at any time. And yet, there's a strange comfort in that awareness—a clarity that comes from knowing exactly what matters.

The wardrobe shrinks to essentials. Warm weather allows a wrap to become my outfit of the day. The kitchen becomes a study in efficiency. Conversations deepen when there are fewer distractions competing for attention. Every object aboard has earned its place through necessity or meaning. There's no room for the accumulation of "just in case" items that clutter our homes on land.

This philosophy extends beyond the boat. It seeps into how I think about everything now—what I wear, what I keep, what I say yes to. The noise of modern life feels louder when you've experienced true quiet. The endless scroll of notifications feels more intrusive when you've known the peace of an uninterrupted horizon.

Perhaps this is what minimalism really means. It's not about deprivation or sacrifice. It's about making space—physical space, mental space, emotional space—for what actually nourishes us. It's about discovering that less truly is more.

Beautiful message Sigrid. It really speaks to me in my effort to pare down and find less distraction, less stuff, and more quiet. Have a lovely journey… Susie
